The right to the city from the Kichwa Otavalo interculturality

Abstract

This work arose as part of the research project of the University of Otavalo Law degree in 2021 “Indigenous Justice in the XXI Century: difficulties, proposals and perspectives”. The objective was to analyze the right to the city from an intercultural approach, specifically from the Kichwa Otavalo culture; For this, a documentary research was carried out with a qualitative approach. As results; It highlights that the conceptions of urban development since colonialism are exclusive of the ancestral traditional ones, which minimizes diversity and interculturality, however, in Otavalo the indigenous Kichwa population has resisted, enhancing their culture in the city and its surroundings. In accordance with this, it was concluded that the city of Otavalo, although it shows the Spanish colonial model, harmonizes in its historic center elements of its culture that are reflected in its colors, murals, cemeteries, parks and place names of streets and avenues.
