Abstract

Ergonomics is essential in laboratories, as it optimizes the interaction between workers and their environment, improving health, well-being and efficiency. In this context, an adequate ergonomic assessment is crucial to identify and mitigate risks that can affect both employee health and organizational productivity. ILO statistics indicate that between 20% and 30% of workers in industrial sectors experience musculoskeletal problems related to ergonomic factors. Furthermore, it is estimated that occupational injuries account for approximately 60% of all compensation claims in the chemical and biotechnology industries, underlining the need to address these issues. This article highlights the assessment of working conditions in a chemistry laboratory of a university institution using the International Labour Organization Ergonomic Checklist. Several ergonomic risks were identified, such as inadequate postures, repetitive movements, load handling, and deficiencies in lighting and use of personal protective equipment. Actions to improve working conditions can have a significant impact on the health and well-being of workers, as well as on the productivity and efficiency of the organization. It is essential that companies prioritize the evaluation and improvement of ergonomic conditions to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.
